About the Event
I Feel Like a Tourist in My Hometown is a work by artist Darren Nixon, first developed during a 2024 residency at CCA Derry~Londonderry. The piece took small groups of participants—each equipped with an iPad and headphones—on a guided walk through sites in Derry linked to formative experiences from Darren’s youth. As they moved through the city, they were immersed in a series of video and sound works that explored a pivotal moment in his life: the period when he first fell in love with techno—and made the decision to leave Derry behind.
The work is rooted in the complex emotions that surface each time Darren returns to the city. It also emerges from his frustration at how the nuanced, personal histories of Northern Irish people are so often subsumed by the dominant narrative of The Troubles.
